Polar Bears - Description
Polar bears are much bigger than other bears. They reach 8-11 feet in an upright position and they weigh up to 900 lbs. They live exclusively in Polar Regions and it is only against their will that they happen to visit southern areas. Mostly they travel south on ice-floes or are brought by humans to be confined in zoos. They are well accustomed to live, feed and breed in tremendous wastelands of snow and ice. They can withstand heavy frosts and survive terrible snowstorms.
Compared to other bears, a Polar bear has an elongated body. They have short and strong paws with broad and long feet and webbed toes. The latter makes them very good swimmers. Polar bears have two layers of fur. The fur looks white to a common observer; although actually the hairs of the fur are colorless tubular structures that in a way act as light conducting fibers. Dark skin permits to accumulate heat, and the coat keeps the amassed energy from getting away.
Polar bears are very strong and enduring. They can dive and swim very well. Blubber equals the weight of the body with the weight of the water, which allows them to swim many
miles. Many times sailors many miles away from coasts and ice have spotted Polar
bears.
Polar bears are strong and agile. They have sharp teeth and claws that leave no chance for prey to escape. Their extreme patience and cunning allows them to track seals and other prey for a long time and then suddenly appear right in front of the unsuspicious victim.
Polar bears look big and clumsy. However, they run and gallop with a striking ease and velocity. They can climb high icy cliffs and wander among seemingly impassable conglomerations of ice, picking up the most convenient paths. Polar bears have highly developed ears and a keen sense of smell.
