Although most people believe that polar bears are extremely aggressive, it is not necessarily so. They are very cautious by nature. A Polar Bear rarely attacks people unless it is are hungry or thinks he or she may be a potential enemy. However, tragedies did take place. There are lots of descriptions of such accidents, which happened during old trips.
Many reckless hunters, who dared to come within a striking distance to bears, were killed. Polar bears are less dangerous in water than on the surface. At present day, however, there are not so many reports on such Polar bear related incidents. The reason may lie in growing acquaintance with man.
Polar bears are ridiculously nosy. They frequently have the courage and audacity to approach northern human settlements and search for food. A smell of
cooking food is likely to attract the animal.
If food stocks are somehow left unsupervised, the owners run the risk of coming back to find empty boxes and barrels and destroyed constructions. Polar bears can also take and eat whatever it is that strikes them as new and interesting. During one of expeditions, polar bears ate an American flag and sails and destroyed meteorological devices.
There were a lot of attempts to track the movement of polar bears over the area. Over the last decade, there were attempts to satellite-track the polar bear. In order to do that, it needs to implant a microchip into a bear's coat or skin. This is a very difficult task, because it demands on the
spot surgery .
A team of specialists on a helicopter scans the area. Once they spot a polar bear, they narcotize it by shooting a tranquilizing dart at the bear. That being
done with that, they land the chopper and conduct a surgery. Such attempts to trace bears have failed in most cases, because polar bears have promptly learned to shed
transmitters. In spite of that, scientists continue to work towards finding new ways to fix chips on the animals. This will help to locate polar bears and thus avoid undesired contacts for safety reasons.
